About Head On (japan)
Head On for the Game Boy was a Japan only release from 1990, developed by Atelier Double. It arrived when the handheld was still new, a time when developers were figuring out what worked on that small screen. This game was part of that early wave of portable experiments.
You control a small car navigating a series of single screen mazes. Your goal is to collect all the dots scattered around each stage while avoiding enemy cars that patrol the lanes. The core mechanic is a simple but tense one: you can only destroy these enemies by ramming them from the side; a head on collision means you lose a life. The mazes are filled with narrow passages and dead ends, forcing you to plan your route carefully and use quick reversals to escape trouble. The game starts calmly but the pressure builds quickly as more enemies fill the screen, demanding sharp reflexes and constant awareness of your surroundings. It feels like a tight, focused puzzle of movement and survival.
