Hatris on the Game Boy came out in 1990 from Bullet-Proof Software. It was one of many puzzle games vying for attention on the handheld, a time when simple, repeatable concepts were the standard. You would see it alongside other falling block games, but it had its own particular twist.

You control two disembodied hands at the bottom of the screen. Your job is to catch hats falling from the sky and stack them on the heads of people who walk in from the sides. The main objective is to clear the screen by completing five-head stacks before the playfield fills up. The signature mechanics involve matching hat types and colors; you can rotate the falling hats to find the correct orientation, and sometimes you must quickly swap hats between different people to make a match. The pacing starts slow but becomes frantic as more characters and hat types appear. It feels like a constant, pleasant scramble to bring order to the chaos.
