About Harlem Globetrotters
Harlem Globetrotters came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by Softie, Inc. It was one of many sports titles on the platform that tried to capture a real world team's spirit, in this case the exhibition basketball squad known for their showmanship. You find it sitting on the shelf alongside other cartridges from that era, a straightforward attempt to bring a slice of arcade-style sports home.
You control one of the Globetrotters players in a two-on-two basketball game against a series of opposing teams. The main objective is to win each match by outscoring the computer, progressing through a tournament. Signature mechanics include performing trick passes and dribbles by pressing specific button combinations, and attempting the team's famous half-court hook shot, the "Alley-Oop," for high scoring chances. The pacing is fast, with the computer opponents quickly becoming quite difficult, often stealing the ball with ease. It feels like a chaotic, sometimes frustrating scramble to pull off a fancy play before the clock runs out.
