Hanafuda 64 is one of those weird, charming N64 gems that never left Japan—but if you’ve got a soft spot for traditional card games, it’s worth tracking down. The hanafuda cards are gorgeous, with that classic woodblock-print style, and the game eases you in with a surprisingly cozy single-player story mode where you play against NPCs in little teahouse matches.
At first, I had no clue what I was doing—those flower-and-ribbon combos don’t exactly explain themselves—but after a few rounds, you start picking up the rhythm. There’s something satisfying about finally recognizing when to go for the sake cup card or holding back for a better combo. The AI isn’t pushover-level either, especially later on.
It’s definitely niche, but if you’ve ever wanted a hanafuda game with a bit of personality (and don’t mind digging through menus in Japanese), this one’s got a quiet, almost meditative vibe to it. Just don’t expect Mario Party levels of chaos.
