About Hammerin' Harry
I first played Hammerin' Harry on my Game Boy in 1992, a port of the arcade game by Irem. It was a time when side scrolling action games were common, and this one stood out for its simple, blue collar premise. You control a construction worker, not a soldier or a fantasy hero, which felt like a fresh idea back then.
You play as Harry, a guy who swings a giant hammer to clear each single screen area of enemies. Your main goal is to get to the exit, fighting through thugs and bosses across a city under construction. The signature mechanics are your hammer swing, which can hit enemies directly or launch projectiles like nails, and the ability to pick up and use items you find, such as temporary power ups. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be punishing if you misjudge a jump or an enemy's pattern. It feels satisfying to land a solid hit and watch an enemy fly off the screen.
