About Gumshoe
Gumshoe came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was part of that early wave of NES games where developers were still figuring out what worked on the console, experimenting with different genres and control schemes.
You control a detective named Mr. Stevenson who automatically walks to the right, and you shoot a gun to make him jump. Your goal is to retrieve five Black Panther Diamonds to rescue his kidnapped daughter from a mob boss. The main mechanics involve this constant rightward scrolling, shooting enemies as they appear, and using your limited bullets to both defeat foes and trigger jumps to navigate platforms. The path through the game's four levels is non-linear, changing based on whether you take high or low routes, and managing your ammunition becomes a constant concern as you shoot balloons to collect more. It feels like a strange but deliberate mix of a light gun game and a platformer, demanding quick reflexes and careful aim just to move forward.
