Gradius II came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed and published by Konami. It was a time when the NES was full of side-scrolling shooters, and this was Konami's direct follow-up to their first Gradius game on the system. While it was a big arcade game, this particular home version was only released in Japan, which made it a cartridge you had to seek out through importers if you lived elsewhere.

You pilot the Vic Viper starship, moving from left to right across scrolling levels filled with enemy craft and environmental hazards. Your main goal is to survive through each stage, destroying everything in your path and confronting a large boss at the end. A signature mechanic is the power-up bar at the bottom of the screen; you collect capsules to move a cursor across this bar, letting you selectively activate upgrades like speed boosts, multiple lasers, or the protective Options that mirror your shots. The game is known for its deliberate pacing; you cannot simply rush in, and a single hit sends you back to a checkpoint with all your upgrades lost, making for a steep difficulty curve. Navigating the tight corridors of the Moai stage while managing your power-ups creates a tense, strategic experience.
