Goonies II on the NES is one of those weirdly ambitious sequels that throws a bunch of ideas at the wall—some stick, some don’t. You start as Mikey, wandering through this weird mix of side-scrolling action and first-person dungeon crawling (yeah, seriously). The Fratellis are still up to no good, and now there’s a mermaid to rescue too, because why not?

At first, it feels like a standard platformer—jumping over pits, whipping enemies with your rope—but then you hit a door, and suddenly you’re in this clunky first-person maze hunting for keys and items. The controls take some getting used to, and the map is borderline cruel at times, but there’s something oddly charming about how janky and experimental it is. Also, the music slaps.

If you can push past the weirdness, there’s a solid adventure here—just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
