Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode is one of those weird, ambitious NES games that tries to do way more than it probably should. You play as Duke Togo (aka Golgo 13), this stone-cold assassin from the manga, and your mission is to take down some shady organization leader. The game throws you into these totally different settings—East Berlin, Athens, even freaking Antarctica—which sounds cool until you hit the maze sections.
And oh man, the mazes. First-person, confusing as hell, with one that’s literally a trap with no exit (thanks, game). The side-scrolling bits feel okay, but those mazes? You’ll either love the challenge or want to chuck your controller. Pro tip: keep the manual handy because those maps are the only way to stay sane.
It’s janky, it’s frustrating, but there’s something weirdly compelling about how bizarre and experimental it is for an NES title.
