About Golf
Nintendo released Golf for the Game Boy in 1989, the same year the handheld itself launched. It was one of the system's early pack-in titles, a simple sports game developed in-house that felt perfectly suited for short sessions. In an era defined by the portable's monochrome screen and its library of arcade-style games, this golf simulation offered a different, more methodical kind of play.
You control a golfer seen from above, navigating a series of flat, two-dimensional courses hole by hole. The main objective is to get the ball into the cup in as few strokes as possible. Signature mechanics include a three-click swing meter for determining power and accuracy, and accounting for environmental factors like wind speed and direction. The game is quiet and deliberate, its challenge coming from reading the lay of the land and mastering the timing of your swing. It feels like a thoughtful puzzle you carry in your pocket.
