About Goal! (europe)
Goal! came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, a time when sports games were finding their footing on the console. It was published by Jaleco, and it offered a straightforward take on soccer without the complex league modes that would appear in later years.
You control a team of players on a horizontal field, passing and shooting to score goals. The main objective is simply to win the match. The game has a few distinct mechanics: you can perform sliding tackles to dispossess opponents, and the goalie has a unique dive animation that covers a surprising amount of the net. The pacing is quite fast, and the difficulty ramps up noticeably against stronger teams, making precise passing essential. It feels like a quick, arcade-style match where a single mistake can lead to a goal against you.
