Ghostbusters II on Game Boy is exactly what you'd expect—a pixelated, slightly janky trip back to 1989. You start off in the firehouse, picking your character (I always go with Venkman because, well, sarcasm translates well in 8-bit). Then it's straight into the streets of New York, blasting ghosts with that wobbly proton stream while the tinny soundtrack does its best to mimic the movie theme.
The controls take some getting used to—your proton pack overheats if you hold the button too long, and dodging those floating pink slime blobs is harder than it looks. But there's something weirdly charming about how the sprites glitch when too many ghosts swarm the screen. It’s not the deepest game, but if you grew up with the movies, seeing that little Ecto-1 sprite putter around just hits right.
Fair warning: the museum level’s boss fight is borderline unfair unless you stockpiled extra lives. Still, it’s a solid time capsule of licensed Game Boy games—flaws and all.
