Gex 64 is one of those weird, late-'90s platformers where a sarcastic gecko cracks jokes while jumping through TV-themed worlds. You start off in a cheesy horror movie level, whipping enemies with your tail and sticking to walls like, well, a gecko. The controls take a minute to get used to—especially the camera—but once you adjust, it’s got that classic N64 charm.
What really sells it is the writing. Gex drops one-liners about pop culture (some of which are painfully dated now), and the levels riff on everything from kung fu flicks to sci-fi. It’s janky in places, but if you grew up with this era of 3D platformers, there’s something oddly comforting about the clunky, colorful chaos. Just don’t expect it to hold up like Mario 64.
