About Getaway, The
I first played The Getaway on the Game Boy in 2002, a release from Team Soho. It came out during a time when the handheld was full of ambitious titles trying to squeeze complex ideas into that small screen, and this game was part of that push.
You control a character navigating through a series of interconnected screens, each one a new room or corridor to explore. Your main goal is to escape from a large, multi-level dungeon, which involves finding keys for locked doors and avoiding or confronting guards. The core mechanics are methodical; you move screen by screen, watching patrol patterns and using a sword for direct combat or a bow for attacking from a distance. The pacing is deliberate, requiring you to observe and plan your route rather than rush ahead, and the difficulty comes from managing your limited health and resources against numerous enemies. It feels tense and thoughtful, where every cleared screen brings a small but tangible relief.
