Gegege No Kitarou - Youkai Souzoushu Arawaru! is one of those classic Game Boy RPGs that flew under the radar outside Japan. You play as Kitarou, the half-youkai kid with the iconic eyeball dad, wandering through a world packed with Japanese folklore creatures. The combat's turn-based but moves quick—no endless menus here—and the sprites have that weirdly charming early 90s vibe where everything's just a little blocky.
What surprised me was how much personality they squeezed into this cartridge. Some youkai join your party if you beat them, others just throw random items at you and vanish. The music's got those crunchy Game Boy tones that somehow make battling a kappa feel epic. It's not the deepest RPG out there, but there's something cozy about how straightforward it is. Just expect to hit a few walls if you don't speak Japanese—some puzzle solutions are... creative.
