About Gear Works
Gear Works was a puzzle game released for the original Game Boy in 1991, developed by Teeny Weeny Games and published by Mindscape. It arrived during a period when the handheld was saturated with action and adventure titles, offering a more methodical, cerebral alternative that relied on logic rather than reflexes.
You do not control a character, but instead manipulate a series of interconnected gears on a grid. The main objective is to connect a starting gear to an end goal by rotating pieces to form a complete, turning chain. Your primary tools are placing new gears from a limited supply and rotating existing ones to change their connection points. Each screen is a self contained puzzle, and the difficulty escalates as new mechanics like fixed blocks and directional gears are introduced. The pacing is deliberate, demanding careful planning before you commit to a move. Solving a particularly stubborn stage provides a quiet, satisfying sense of order restored.
