Gauntlet Legends came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, a time when 3D action games were really finding their footing on the console. It was developed by Atari Games, and it took the old arcade formula of the original Gauntlet and built a proper adventure around it. You weren't just playing until you ran out of quarters; you were in for a full quest.

You pick one of four characters, like a warrior or a valkyrie, and venture through a series of themed worlds. Your goal is to stop the evil wizard Garm by collecting magical runes. The game plays out screen by screen, with you clearing rooms of monsters using your character's main weapon, be it a sword or a bow. You are constantly hunting for keys to open doors and collecting treasure to increase your score, which in turn lets you level up and permanently improve your strength and magic. The pacing is relentless, with enemies spawning continuously, and it can get quite difficult, especially when playing alone. It feels like a race against your own health bar as you fight through the chaos.
