About Gauntlet Ii (usa, Europe)
I remember picking up Gauntlet II for the Game Boy around 1990. It was published by Tengen, and on a system full of puzzle games and platformers, this was one of the few attempts at a portable dungeon crawl. It felt ambitious for the small screen.
You control a warrior, wizard, elf, or valkyrie, moving them screen by screen through maze-like dungeons. Your main goal is simply to survive, clearing each room of spawning monsters while managing your constantly decreasing health. You shoot projectiles at ghosts, grunts, and demons, and you spend a lot of time breaking down walls with your sword or searching for hidden food to stay alive. The pacing is relentless; you are always under pressure from the health clock and the endless enemy generators. It feels like a tense, strategic scramble from start to finish.
