Ganbare Nippon! Olympics 2000 is one of those early N64 sports games that tries to cram in as many events as possible—some work, some don’t, but it’s got that weirdly charming late-90s energy. You’ll start off picking from a handful of events like sprinting, swimming, and weightlifting, all with that slightly janky N64 control scheme where timing matters more than finesse.
The graphics are about what you’d expect—blocky athletes, stiff animations—but there’s something oddly satisfying about nailing a perfect pole vault or barely edging out the AI in the 100m dash. It’s not exactly realistic, but it’s the kind of game where you’ll keep retrying events just to shave off half a second. If you’ve got friends around, the multiplayer can get surprisingly competitive, especially in the more chaotic events.
Definitely a niche pick, but if you’re into retro sports games, it’s got enough weird charm to be worth a few rounds.
