I first played Ganbare Goemon 2 on my Game Boy in 1993, a time when portable games were mostly simple affairs. Konami published it, and it was part of their long running series about the heroic Goemon, though it felt distinct from the console versions. It was a solid action platformer that fit right in with what you expected from a Game Boy cart, no more and no less.

You control Goemon, a pipe wielding hero, navigating through side scrolling stages and top down towns. Your main goal is to rescue your kidnapped friends by progressing through a series of levels, each culminating in a boss fight. You attack enemies with your pipe, and you can also collect coins to buy items from shops or find power ups that extend your pipe's range. The game moves at a steady pace, though some later sections require precise jumps and can be quite challenging. It feels like a compact adventure that is satisfying to complete.
