Ganbare Goemon - Sarawareta Ebisumaru is one of those weird, charming Game Boy titles that never made it outside Japan. You play as Goemon, the blue-haired ninja with a pipe, trying to rescue his goofy pal Ebisumaru after he gets kidnapped (again). The controls take a second to get used to—you’ve got this weird jump-slash move that feels awkward at first, but once it clicks, bouncing between platforms while smacking enemies becomes oddly satisfying.

The pixel art has that classic Konami charm, with tiny expressive sprites and these little background details that make the world feel alive. Some of the platforming can be brutal—expect to retry a few jumps—but the checkpoints are fair. If you’re into retro action-platformers with a quirky sense of humor, this one’s a hidden gem. Just don’t expect an English translation.
