Ganbare Goemon - Neo Momoyama Bakufu No Odori is one of those N64 gems that never made it outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s pure chaotic fun. You play as Goemon and his crew, bouncing around a weirdly anachronistic feudal Japan where you’ll fight ninjas, ride giant robot cats, and occasionally break into impromptu dance battles. The controls take a minute to get used to—switching between platforming, brawling, and weird mini-games keeps you on your toes.
The art style is bright and cartoony, with these exaggerated character designs that make every cutscene feel like a fever dream. I spent way too long just messing around in the first town because half the NPCs say ridiculous things if you talk to them. Combat’s simple but satisfying, especially when you pull off Goemon’s pipe spin attack and send enemies flying.
It’s not the deepest game, but it’s got this goofy charm that makes it hard to put down. If you’re into quirky action-adventure stuff, this one’s worth digging up.
