Game & Watch Gallery 2 is like digging through an old toy box and finding something way cooler than you remembered. It takes those simple LCD games from the '80s—stuff like Fire Attack or Donkey Kong Jr.—and gives them two versions: one that looks just like the original (tiny sprites, beep-boop sounds) and another with full-color, cartoony graphics that somehow make bouncing eggs or juggling chefs way more fun than they should be.

At first I thought the "modern" versions would feel gimmicky, but they actually add little surprises—like how in Manhole, the classic mode has you flipping tiles, but the updated one turns it into a chaotic sidewalk where you’re rescuing people from open manholes while dodging rolling watermelons. Weird? Yeah. Weirdly addictive? Also yeah.

It’s the kind of game you play for five minutes and suddenly realize an hour’s gone by. The controls are stupidly simple (it’s a Game Boy, after all), but some of these mini-games get brutal at higher speeds. I still can’t crack 200 points in Octopus without panicking. If you’ve got a soft spot for retro stuff or just want something pick-up-and-play, this one’s a no-brainer.
