Galaxian came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1984, a Namco game that was part of the early wave of releases for the console. It arrived when players were getting used to having arcade-style shooters at home, sitting alongside other titles that defined that first era of the NES.

You control a small spaceship confined to the bottom of the screen, moving it left and right to avoid enemy fire and return shots. Your main goal is to survive and clear each formation of Galaxian aliens before they overwhelm you. The signature mechanics are the aliens breaking from their formation to dive-bomb your position in swooping attacks, and your ship's firing limitation, where you can only have one shot on screen at a time unless you destroy an enemy, which instantly recharges your cannon. The pacing is relentless; as soon as you clear one wave, a new, more aggressive one immediately takes its place against a simple scrolling starfield. It feels tense and immediate, a constant test of your reflexes and positioning.
