G.A.S.P!! Fighter's NEXTream (Japan) game

G.A.S.P!! Fighter's NEXTream is one of those late-era N64 fighters that never made it outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s got this weird, over-the-top energy that makes it stand out. You pick from a roster of fighters that range from "kinda normal" to "what even is this?"—think cyborgs, mutants, and some dude who might just be a walking pile of sludge.

The controls are surprisingly smooth for an N64 fighting game, and the special moves are flashy without being impossible to pull off. I remember booting it up for the first time and immediately getting wrecked by some teleporting ninja, but after a few rounds, the rhythm clicks. The stages are wild too—one second you’re fighting in a neon city, the next you’re dodging lava pits.

It’s not as polished as something like Tekken, but that’s part of the charm. If you’re into obscure fighting games, this one’s a blast to mess around with.
