About Freedom Force
Freedom Force came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by Sunsoft. It was part of that wave of NES games where developers were experimenting with different takes on established genres, in this case a light gun shooter that tried to build a more structured adventure around the peripheral.
You control a squad of anti-terrorist operatives viewed from an overhead perspective, moving them screen by screen through enemy compounds. Your main objective is to rescue hostages and eliminate all terrorists in an area, but you cannot harm the civilians. The signature mechanic is switching between your squad members on the fly, each with their own health bar and special weapon like a machine gun or grenade launcher. You also manage a limited supply of ammunition, forcing you to pick up drops from defeated enemies. The pacing is deliberate, as you must carefully clear each room and check for hostages before proceeding. It feels tense and methodical, like a careful sweep through a hostile environment where a single mistake can cost a life.
