About Forsaken 64
Forsaken 64 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was part of that wave of early 3D shooters trying to figure out what worked on the console, a time when developers were experimenting with how to translate fast paced action to the new hardware. This one stood out for its particular take on movement and combat.
You pilot a small hoverbike through tight, maze like tunnels and large caverns, tasked with clearing each area of enemy craft and locating an exit. The game is structured screen by screen, with each new section loading after you complete the previous one. Your main tools are a variety of projectile weapons and a free aiming system that lets you shoot in any direction, independent of your movement. This six degrees of freedom control means you are constantly managing your position, thrust, and orientation to line up shots while avoiding fire. The levels are often dark and confusing, filled with narrow passages that require careful navigation. It is a difficult game that demands your full attention as you search for keys, destroy generators, and fend off ambushes from all sides. Playing Forsaken 64 feels like being in a frantic, disorienting dogfight inside a claustrophobic metal hive.
