Formation Z is one of those weird, early NES shooters that tried something different—you start off in a jet, blasting enemies like any other horizontal scroller, but then you can suddenly transform into a clunky robot. It’s not exactly smooth, but there’s something oddly satisfying about stomping around in mech mode, even if the controls feel a bit stiff.
The levels are short and chaotic, with enemies swarming in from all sides. The jet handles better for dodging, but the robot’s firepower comes in handy when things get too crowded. It’s not the prettiest or most polished shooter out there, but if you’re into retro games with janky charm, this one’s got personality.
Just don’t expect a deep experience—it’s pure arcade-style action from start to finish.
