Flying Dragon on the N64 is this weird little gem that somehow mashes up RPG elements with fighting game mechanics—and it kinda works? You’ve got two totally different modes: Virtual Mode is full 3D brawling where you can tweak your fighter’s stats like an RPG, while SD Mode is straight-up 2D arcade-style fights with chibi characters. The shift between them feels jarring at first, but it’s cool having both options in one cart.
Virtual Mode’s customization is surprisingly deep—you’re leveling up moves, buying gear, even managing stamina between fights. Meanwhile, SD Mode is pure button-mashing nostalgia with super exaggerated special moves. The roster’s got everything from ninjas to luchadores, and some of the stages have goofy hazards that keep matches chaotic. It’s not the prettiest N64 fighter, but there’s charm in its janky animations and over-the-top voice lines.
If you dig oddball fighting games with personality, this one’s worth a few rounds—just don’t expect Tekken-level polish.
