About Flipull - An Exciting Cube Game (japan)
Flipull came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, a puzzle game from Taito. It was one of many clever titles that appeared on the NES, offering a different kind of challenge compared to the platformers and action games that dominated the era. You would pop this cartridge in and be presented with a grid of colored blocks, a simple setup that hid a surprisingly deep test of planning.
You control a cursor to select pairs of adjacent, matching colored cubes, causing them and any cubes stacked above to disappear. The main objective is to clear each screen's entire block structure before time runs out. The signature mechanics involve gravity; when you remove supporting blocks, the ones above fall down, often creating new matches. You also have to manage the timer, which constantly ticks down and adds pressure. The game starts calmly but quickly demands fast decisions as the layouts become more precarious. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against a collapsing puzzle.
