About Fleet Commander Vs

Fleet Commander VS came out for the original Game Boy in 1990, a time when monochrome portables were full of simple action games. I don't recall the developer offhand, but it was part of that early wave where every other cartridge seemed to be a space shooter. You controlled a lone starfighter, a tiny sprite moving against a grid of stars, tasked with clearing each sector of enemy formations. The objective was straightforward: survive the onslaught and defeat the mothership waiting at the end of each stage.

You maneuver your ship with the D-pad, firing lasers at waves of alien craft that swoop in from the top of the screen. Two mechanics defined the game for me. First, you could collect power-ups that changed your weapon, switching from a single shot to a spread pattern or a more powerful beam. Second, the game employed a gravity mechanic; your ship had momentum, so you would drift after changing direction, making precise navigation through asteroid fields a constant challenge. The pacing was relentless, with enemies swarming quickly, and the difficulty ramped up sharply after the first few levels. It felt like a constant scramble for positioning and the right weapon to handle each new threat.
