About Fish Dude
Fish Dude came out on the Game Boy in 1991, developed by Sculptured Software. It was part of that wave of early portable games where developers were figuring out what worked on the small screen, often creating condensed versions of bigger console ideas. You don't hear much about it now, but it had its moment among kids swapping cartridges on the school bus.
You control a deep sea diver, moving screen by screen through underwater caves. Your main goal is to collect a certain number of treasure chests scattered across the levels. You have a limited supply of harpoons to fend off the sea creatures that patrol the corridors; running out means you're defenseless. The levels are maze-like, requiring you to remember your path and manage your air supply, which constantly ticks down. It's not a fast game, but the persistent air timer creates a steady tension. Navigating the tight passages while avoiding enemies feels claustrophobic and methodical.
