About Faxanadu (japan)
Faxanadu came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of side scrolling action RPGs on the NES, sitting alongside games like Zelda II, but with its own distinct world and systems.
You control a lone adventurer returning to a dwarven tree town only to find it dying, poisoned by a mysterious fog. Your goal is to climb the massive World Tree, defeat the evil at its root, and restore life. You explore the land screen by screen, fighting monsters with a sword that you can upgrade, and later a bow. You collect gold to buy better gear, magic, and keys to unlock new paths. The game is methodical; you need to manage your resources and often backtrack to previously visited towns as you grow stronger. Progress feels earned through careful exploration and combat, creating a slow but satisfying sense of ascent through a strange, decaying world.
