About Fantasy Zone (unl)
Fantasy Zone for the NES was an unlicensed cartridge, a port of a Sega arcade game that felt a bit out of place on Nintendo's system. It was developed by Sega, and playing it on the NES always had a certain novelty, a glimpse of a different style of game from that era.
You pilot a small, round ship called the Opa-Opa, flying left and right across pastel-colored, looping stages. Your main goal is to destroy all the enemy bases, called "generators," on the screen before a timer runs out. Once the generators are gone, a large boss appears for you to fight. Two mechanics define the game: you can buy weapons and upgrades from shops that float by, spending the coins dropped by defeated enemies, and you have direct control over your movement, including the ability to turn on a dime and change direction instantly. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all directions, and the difficulty escalates quickly, demanding precise movement and smart purchasing decisions. It feels like a constant, frantic scramble to manage your resources and clear the screen.
