About Fantasy Zone (japan)
Fantasy Zone came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, a conversion of Sega's arcade game. It was a different kind of shooter for the platform, which had plenty of straightforward military-themed ones. This one was bright and strange, a side-scrolling adventure that felt more like a cartoon.
You pilot a little ship called the Opa-Opa, which looks like a plane with feet. Your goal is to clear each area by destroying all the enemy generators; once they are gone, a large boss appears for you to fight. You can fly freely left or right across the often looping stages, buying weapons and speed upgrades from shops that pop up. The pacing is relentless, with enemies spawning constantly from the generators you need to find and eliminate. It feels like a frantic shopping trip inside a chaotic alien carnival.
