About Family Trainer - Jogging Race (japan)
Family Trainer: Jogging Race came out in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan, a game by Bandai designed for their Family Trainer mat. It was part of a wave of peripherals that tried to get players off the couch, turning the living room floor into a track.
You control a runner on screen by physically running in place on the mat's pressure-sensitive panels. The main goal is to finish the race ahead of the other on-screen competitors. The core mechanics are simple: you alternate your feet on the left and right panels to run, and you press a specific panel with your hand to jump over hurdles that appear. The pacing is steady, but it quickly becomes a physical challenge as you try to maintain speed and time your jumps correctly. It feels like a genuine workout, leaving you more out of breath than your character on the screen.
