About Family Trainer - Daiundoukai (japan)
Family Trainer - Daiundoukai came out in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of games designed to get you off the couch, using the Family Trainer mat controller. This wasn't a game you played with a standard D-pad; you had to physically step on the mat's panels to control the action.
You control an athlete competing in a series of track and field events. The main goal is to complete each event as fast as possible, competing for a high score. The signature mechanic is entirely built around the pressure-sensitive mat; you run in place on the "run" buttons and then jump onto specific panels for actions like hurdling or long jumps. The pacing is frantic, as you have to coordinate your feet quickly and accurately. It feels uniquely exhausting and silly, a direct translation of your own physical effort into the game's simple, colorful world.
