About Family Trainer - Aerobics Studio (japan)
Family Trainer - Aerobics Studio came out in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, published by Bandai. It was part of a series of games that used the Family Trainer mat controller, a peripheral you stepped on to play. This was during a time when the NES library was expanding with all sorts of experimental ideas, and this game fit right into that trend of trying to get players off the couch.
You control an on-screen character by physically stepping on the corresponding arrows on the mat. The main objective is to follow the aerobic routines shown, matching your steps to the commands that scroll up from the bottom of the screen. Signature mechanics include keeping pace with the music and the scrolling arrows, performing specific sequences for different exercise routines, and trying to maintain your stamina throughout the session. The pacing is steady, but it can get surprisingly difficult to keep up as the routines become more complex and your legs get tired. It feels like a genuine, tiring workout disguised as a game.
