About Family Jockey (japan)
Family Jockey came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, a Namco title from a time when the NES library was filling up with all sorts of experiments. It was a two player horse racing game, something you didn't see every day, and it required the Famicom's special horse racing controller to play properly. This peripheral had two large buttons you'd slap to make your jockey whip the horse, which was the entire game in a nutshell.
You control a jockey on a horse, and the goal is simply to win the race. The core mechanic is the frantic, rhythmic mashing of those two big buttons to build up your speed; the screen is a side view of the track, and you just watch your horse and the opponent's move along. There's a stamina meter you have to manage, because whipping too much will tire your horse out and slow you down. The pacing is incredibly intense for such a simple concept, a pure test of endurance for your hands. It feels like a bizarre, specialized party game that is entirely about how fast you can press two buttons.
