About Faceball 2000
I remember picking up Faceball 2000 for my Game Boy back in 1991. It was developed by Xanth Software F/X, and it stood out because it was one of the few first-person shooters you could get on a handheld at the time. The Game Boy library was full of platformers and puzzle games, so this felt like a different kind of challenge.
You control a small character navigating maze-like levels from a first-person view. The main goal is to shoot all the bouncing smiley face enemies in a stage before you can exit. You explore screen by screen, and the mazes are filled with teleporters and doors that open with switches. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as the mazes get more complex and the enemies multiply. It feels surprisingly frantic for a Game Boy game, a constant cycle of dodging and shooting in tight, wireframe corridors.
