Man, FIFA '98 on the N64 was the game that made me fall in love with soccer—or football, depending on where you're from. The second you boot it up, you're hit with that classic late '90s EA Sports energy: big stadiums, chunky player models, and that unmistakable FIFA soundtrack. The controls feel surprisingly smooth for an N64 sports game, and sliding tackles actually have weight to them instead of just being a weird animation.
What really set it apart was the Road to World Cup mode—you could take any national team through qualifiers, and it actually felt like an achievement when you made it to the finals. The graphics were blocky even back then, but the animations had this exaggerated charm, like players doing these ridiculous mid-air flips after a hard foul. And yeah, the commentary was repetitive after a while, but hearing "He's got a foot like a traction engine!" never got old.
Still holds up if you're into retro sports games, especially with friends. Just don't expect modern FIFA polish—this is pure late '90s soccer chaos.
