F-Zero X came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of the faster, more intense racing games on the system at the time, pushing the hardware to render thirty vehicles on twisting tracks without any slowdown. This was a big step up from the mode 7 style of the original SNES game, giving the series a true 3D presence.

You pilot a high-speed anti-gravity machine, competing against twenty-nine other racers across a variety of futuristic circuits. The main goal is straightforward: finish in the top three to advance through the cups. Your craft has a health bar that also serves as your boost energy; you can sacrifice some of your life to get a sudden burst of speed, a constant risk-reward decision. Another key mechanic is the side attack, a quick lunge to the left or right to shove opponents into walls or off the track entirely. The game moves at a blistering pace, and the tracks are designed with sharp turns, narrow pathways, and deadly drops that punish even small mistakes. It feels like you are constantly balancing raw speed against the very real threat of instant destruction.
