About Extreme-g
Extreme-G came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, a futuristic racer from Acclaim Studios London. It was part of that early wave of N64 games that pushed the system's capabilities, offering a sense of speed that felt new at the time. The game arrived before its more famous sequel, establishing a particular kind of high velocity sci-fi racing on the console.
You pilot an armed grav bike through winding, enclosed tracks set in abstract futuristic locations. The main goal is straightforward: finish the race in first place. Your bike has a boost function that drains a meter, which you can refill by collecting canisters scattered on the track. You also carry weapons, like missiles and mines, to disrupt the seven other AI opponents. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty spikes noticeably in the later cups. Navigating the twisting tubes and tunnels at top speed, while managing your energy for boosts and watching for incoming fire, creates a tense and demanding experience. It feels like a constant fight for control on the edge of catastrophe.
