About Exerion (japan)

Exerion came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1983, a time when the console's library was still taking shape. Jaleco published it, and the game was an early example of a vertical scrolling shooter on the platform. You could see developers experimenting with what the hardware could do, and this was one of the attempts to bring an arcade style experience home.

You pilot a small ship against waves of enemy craft and formations. Your main goal is simply to survive as long as possible, clearing the screen of foes while dodging their return fire. The game has a couple of distinct mechanics; you have two different firing rates, a slow single shot and a rapid but less powerful burst, which you must switch between strategically. The background scenery, with its parallax scrolling mountains and clouds, gives a surprising sense of depth for such an early title. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes and careful shot placement. It feels like a constant, tense dance between aggression and evasion.
