About Elite
Elite on the NES was a port of the 1984 space simulation originally developed by Ian Bell and David Braben. It arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in a field dominated by platformers and action games, offering a different kind of ambition with its open universe and complex systems.
You pilot a Cobra Mk III spaceship, starting as a novice with a small cargo hold and basic laser. Your main goal is to earn credits through trade, bounty hunting, or piracy, all while improving your ship and reputation. Key mechanics include navigating between star systems using a hyperspace jump, managing your fuel and cargo, and engaging in wireframe 3D dogfights against pirates or police. The game is notoriously difficult, with a steep learning curve and permadeath ensuring every decision carries weight. It feels like charting your own path through a vast, indifferent cosmos where survival is a constant calculation.
