About Elevator Action
Elevator Action on the Game Boy came out in 1991, published by Taito. It was a time when developers were figuring out how to shrink arcade hits for the small screen, and this was their portable take on the 1983 arcade game. You got a full action game in your pocket, which felt like a decent achievement for the hardware.
You control a spy navigating a tall building floor by floor. Your goal is to retrieve secret documents from specific rooms and then escape from the ground floor. The core loop involves riding elevators up and down, ducking into rooms to grab files, and avoiding or eliminating enemy agents. You can kick enemies, shoot them with a pistol you sometimes find, and use elevator shafts to quickly change floors. The screen advances only when you move between floors, giving the game a methodical, almost puzzle-like pace as you plan your route. It gets difficult quickly, with more agents appearing and their patterns becoming less predictable. Playing it feels like a tense, careful dance through a hostile environment.
