About Earthworm Jim 3d
Earthworm Jim 3D came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by VIS Entertainment. It was part of that wave of late 90s platformers trying to make the jump from 2D sprites to a fully three-dimensional world. You could find it on the shelf alongside other N64 adventures, a time when every developer was experimenting with how characters should move and interact in this new space.
You control Jim, an earthworm in a powerful robotic suit, and your main goal is to rescue Princess What's-Her-Name from the evil Psy-Crow. The game is structured through screen by screen exploration across various planets. Your signature mechanics involve using Jim's own body as a whip to attack enemies and as a grappling hook to swing across gaps. You also pilot a rocket in several shooter segments, dodging asteroids and enemy ships. The pacing can be uneven, with some levels feeling straightforward and others presenting sudden difficulty spikes, especially in the platforming sections. Navigating the 3D environments with Jim's particular movement style creates a unique, slightly unwieldy feeling that defines the entire experience.
