Earthbound (Proto) was an early version of the game that never saw a full release on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed by Ape and published by Nintendo, it was a product of its time on the NES, a console where role playing games were often ambitious but technically constrained. This prototype represents the initial attempt to bring its particular style of adventure to players.

You control a young boy named Ninten, exploring the world screen by screen from a top down perspective. Your main goal is to investigate a strange psychic disturbance, which involves traveling to different towns, talking to people, and battling an odd assortment of enemies like Starmen and moving lamps. Combat is turn based, and a key mechanic is that sometimes enemies can be defeated automatically before a fight even begins if you are strong enough. You also collect money from battles to buy better equipment and recover at hotels. The game's pacing is deliberate, and it can be quite difficult, requiring careful management of your party's health and resources. Playing it feels like uncovering a rough but earnest blueprint for a much larger world.
