About Duke Nukem - Zero Hour (f)
Duke Nukem: Zero Hour came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by Eurocom. It was part of that wave of late 90s shooters trying to adapt to a console with a unique controller, and it stood out by taking Duke into a third person perspective. This wasn't just another corridor shooter; it was an attempt to give the character more room to move and interact with larger environments.
You control Duke Nukem across various time periods, from the wild west to a medieval castle, with the main goal being to stop an alien invasion. The gameplay mixes third person shooting with light exploration and puzzle solving. Signature mechanics include using a variety of era specific weapons, like a six shooter or a crossbow, and piloting vehicles such as a mine cart or a tank in certain levels. The pacing can be uneven, with some sections feeling straightforward and others becoming confusing due to the level design. Navigating the sometimes mazelike areas while managing your health and ammo provides a decent challenge. It feels like a rough but ambitious experiment that captures the essence of Duke's attitude in a different format.
