About Dragons Lair
I remember picking up Dragons Lair for the NES back in 1992. It was published by Motivetime, and it stood out on the system because it tried to bring an animated cartoon to life. At a time when most games were built with sprites and tiles, this one promised something different, though the hardware struggled to do it justice.
You control Dirk the Daring, a knight trying to rescue Princess Daphne from a dragon. The game plays out screen by screen, presenting you with animated scenes. Your main job is to react quickly by pressing the correct direction or the sword button at the right moment. It is essentially a series of quick time events where a wrong move leads to an immediate, often comical, death. The challenge comes from memorizing the timing for each sequence, as the pacing is relentless and the difficulty is steep. Playing it feels like a tense memory test set inside a cartoon.
